How to Get a Real Estate License in Louisiana

Louisiana_Capitol_Building-300x222

The Louisiana Real Estate Commission grants sales agent licenses to those candidates who qualify. There are certain requirements and protocol to follow before being granted a license.

General Requirements for a Louisiana Real Estate License

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of 90-hours of real estate curriculum
  • Submit to a criminal background check
  • Successfully pass the licensure exam
  • Be sponsored by a licensed real estate broker

Louisiana Real Estate Education Requirement

The Louisiana Real Estate Commission (LREC) requires all candidates to complete 90-hours of pre-licensing education. College level courses may be accepted in lieu of some of the hours but you should have the course pre-approved by the commission before taking any courses. Real estate schools offer online and in-person classes to meet your needs. The LREC has a list of pre-approved Louisiana programs and schools.

The real estate school will assist you in the process of registering and scheduling the licensure exam (this is separate from the school’s final exam).

In order to receive a certificate of completion from the real estate school you must pass a final examination. You will not be granted a license without proof of successfully completing the pre-licensing education.

Initial Application and Criminal Background Check

An initial application and criminal background check must be completed to gain permission to take the licensing exam. First, you need to order a criminal background check to be completed by Acxiom Information Security Services. Instructions for the background check are on the LREC website. You are responsible for any fees associated with ordering the investigation.

After you have ordered the background check you may submit the Louisiana Real Estate Salesperson License Application(Part A). You will need to include proof of your real estate education completion with this application. If you already have Errors and Omissions Insurance you may submit it at the same time (it is required with Part B). The cost of submitting this application is $90. Upon approval, the LREC will give you permission to take the licensing examination.

Louisiana Real Estate Salesperson Application (Part B)

Part B of your license application should be submitted after passing the licensing examination. A sponsoring broker’s information and signature is required along with Errors and Omissions Insurance. Once LREC approves your application they will send you a real estate salesperson license.
