 How to Get an Alaska Real Estate License

Before you may facilitate the buying and selling of real estate property in the state of Alaska, you must obtain an Alaska Real Estate License from the Alaska Real Estate Commission. There are several steps and requirements to acquiring this license.

Prerequisites for an Alaska Real Estate License

  • 19 years old
  • Must be employed by a licensed broker
  • May not have a criminal background that the Commission deems inappropriate for a real estate agent
  • Complete 40 hours of real estate education
  • Pass the real estate exam
  • File a license application within 18 months of completing the education requirement and 6 months of passing the exam.

Alaska Real Estate Pre-Licensing Education

Alaska requires a 40-hour pre-licensing course before you may register to take the licensing exam. The Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development maintains a list of approved real estate schools as well as their contact information.

Registering to Take the Alaska Real Estate License Exam

In order to take the exam, you must make a reservation with Pearson VUE, the test administration company. You may make your real estate exam reservation online or by phone (800) 274-5992. You must make your reservation at least 24 hours in advance. The $100 testing fee is due upon making the reservation and may be paid by credit card, debit card, electronic check, or voucher.

Taking the Alaska Real Estate Exam

On the day of the test, you must provide two forms of government issued ID. Both IDs must be currently valid and bear signatures. One of the IDs must have a photograph. Pearson Vue has a list of acceptable IDs. You should arrive at the testing center 30 minutes early to allow for check-in procedures.

It is recommended that you leave your personal items at home or in your car. The testing center provides a secure area for you to leave a few items like cell phones and coats. The testing center offers pencils and scratch paper but you must bring your own calculator (silent, hand held, non-printing, without alphabetic functions) if you would like to use one.

You have 4 hours to complete the computer-based exam. A short tutorial on how to use the computer precedes the exam and does not subtract time from the 4 hour allotment. Once you have completed your exam, a score report will be provided for you before you leave the testing center.

Score Reports

Your test score will reflect a scaled score; this means that the test questions are assigned different point values based on their difficulty. In order to pass the test you must have a scaled score of 75. All “passing” score reports will always show a “75”; this is not the actual score of your exam. A “failing” score report will show the actual achieved score to illustrate how close the candidate was to passing. Remember, the scaled score does not reflect the actual number of questions answered correctly.

Obtaining Your Alaska Real Estate License

Within 18 months of completing the 40-hour real estate education course and 6 months of passing the licensing exam, you may submit your application for an Alaska Real Estate License. You must include the $550 licensing fee, your original exam score report, certificate of completion from the real estate school you attended, and any license history from another state. You must also be employed by a broker to be eligible for your license.
