How to Get a Real Estate License in Indiana

Indiana-Real-Estate-Commission-300x201

In order to get a real estate license in the state of Indiana, you must be considered qualified by the Indiana Real Estate Commission (IREC). There are several requirements to become qualified.

General Requirements for an Indiana Real Estate License

  • At least 18 years old
  • An acceptable criminal record, determined by the IREC
  • Completion of a 40-hour required curriculum
  • Passing score on the salespersons’ examination
  • Association with a broker

Indiana Real Estate Pre-Licensing Education

It is important to choose an educational provider that is approved by the Indiana Real Estate Commission. Classes are offered on the college level by various colleges and universities around the state for candidates who are interested. Real estate schools offer a great alternative for candidates looking to become licensed quickly.

The 40-hour curriculum will cover topics you need to know in order to pass the salespersons examination. At the conclusion of your education you will be given documentation that you have completed the 40-hour course. That documentation is necessary to take the examination and apply for your license.

Registering to Take the Indiana Salespersons’ Exam

The IREC employs Pearson VUE, a testing company, to handle the examination administration. In order to arrange for your test you must contact Pearson VUE. You may register for the Indiana Real Estate Exam online or over the phone (800-274-2717). Pearson VUE offers the Indiana exams in testing center across the state of Indiana and in certain locations in Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois (List of Locations). The exam fee of $65 is due upon making your reservation and is payable by credit card, debit card, voucher, or electronic check.

Taking the Indiana Real Estate Salespersons’ Examination

You should arrive at the testing center 30 minutes prior to your appointment to allow for the check-in process. The testing center staff will verify your two forms of identification, verify your education, take your photograph for your score report, and give you the Candidate Rules Agreement. Your two forms of identification must both bear a valid signature and pre-printed name. One identification must be government issued and include your photo. You must bring the original certificate from your real estate pre-licensing course verifying your completion of the 40-hour coursework.

The examination is given via computer; candidates will be given an opportunity to learn the functions of the computer and practice with it before beginning the exam. The full exam is 130 questions with a time limit of four hours. Eighty of the questions are devoted to the general portion while 50 of the questions are state specific. The first time you take the exam you must take both sections together. If you fail one of the portions you may retake that portion alone at another time.

Scoring of the Real Estate Exam

The passing score for the salespersons’ exam is reported as 75. Each question is assigned a point value based on its ease. With the questions varying in levels of difficulty the scores are not percentages but points earned.

If you do not earn 75 points in one or both of the sections you may retake them separately when you are ready. Your score report will show diagnostic information to help you prepare again.

Obtaining Your Indiana Real Estate Salesperson License

Upon passing both portions of the examination, you will be given a license application at the testing center. You must include the original certificate of completion from your coursework, the original official score report from your exam, and the application fee. The IREC will issue your license upon approving your application.
