How to Get a Montana Real Estate License
In Montana the Montana Board of Realty Regulation manages the real estate salesperson licenses. You may not conduct real estate business as an agent until you have been granted a license.

Education Requirement for Montana Real Estate License
Prior to applying for a real estate license candidates must complete a 60-hour pre-licensing course. The courses may be taken with various preapproved Montana real estate schools who offer online classes or classroom sessions. You must have a certificate of completion for this course in order for your application to be considered for licensure.

Scheduling the Montana Real Estate Examination
Applied Measurement Professionals, Inc. (AMP) is contracted through the Montana Board of Realty Regulation to administer all real estate examinations. In order to schedule your exam you may use AMP’s website, call their scheduling assistants (800-345-6559), or mail them a registration form found at the end of the Montana Real Estate Candidate Handbook. The $99 examination fee may be paid by credit card if scheduling on the website or by phone, if registering via mail you will need a cashier’s check or money order.
Taking the Montana Real Estate Examination
You must arrive to the testing center 15 minutes prior to your scheduled exam to allow time for check-in. Test center staff will check your two forms of identification and take your picture for your score report. Both of your identifications must be valid with your name and signature. One of your IDs must bear your picture. Without valid identification you will not be admitted to the test and you will forfeit the testing fee.
The test will be given on a computer; a brief tutorial will show you how to use the computer and give you an opportunity to practice all the functions. You will be provided with scratch paper and pencils for math calculations.
You will be permitted 3.5 hours to complete both portions of the exam. The national portion contains 100 questions, 70 of which you must answer correctly to earn a passing score. The state portion contains 33 questions, 23 of which you must answer correctly.
Your score report will be given to upon checking out of the testing center. If you pass the examination, you must submit your license application within 12 months. If you do not pass the examination, you will receive diagnostic information regarding your score. You may schedule a retake for a later date as soon as you are ready.
Applying for a Montana Real Estate License
Once you completed the education requirement and passed the salesperson examination, you are ready to submit your application for real estate license. The application must be submitted within two years of completing the course and one year of passing the exam; you must attach documentation of both requirements to your application. You will need to include the $122.50 application and recovery fee with your application (do not send cash). There is also a section on the application for your broker to complete and sign. You should receive notification of your real estate license status within two weeks of submitting your application.
