How to Get a Wisconsin Real Estate License
The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services oversees real estate licensing in the state of Wisconsin. Several requirements must be met by all applicants prior to being granted a license.
General Requirements:
- At least 18 years of age
- Complete 72 hours of real estate education
- Passing score on licensing examination
Educational Requirements for a Wisconsin Real Estate License
All real estate license candidates must complete 72 hours of pre-licensing curriculum at an approved educational provider. Candidates have the option of classroom instruction or distance learning to complete the required material. The real estate school will issue a completion certificate once you have met the completion criteria. You will need this certificate to submit with your licensing application. You have five years from the date of finishing your education to submit your application.
Scheduling the Wisconsin Real Estate Examination
The Pearson VUE testing company is commissioned to govern and administer all real estate licensing examinations. In order to take the examination you must make an appointment and pay the testing fee; walk-ins are not accepted at the testing center.
There are three ways to make an examination appointment: internet (www.pearsonvue.com), phone (888) 204-6284, or by fax. The testing fee of $71, payable by electronic check, credit card, debit card, or voucher, is due upon registration. Fax reservations require the form found at the end of the Candidate Handbook (http://asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/095000.pdf). Internet and phone reservations can be made 24 hours in advance of the testing appointment you request.
Taking the Wisconsin Real Estate Examination
Pearson VUE offers the examination at locations in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois. They suggest that you arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment to allow for the check-in procedures. Late arrival may disqualify you for the exam that day. You will need two forms of current identification: one government-issued with your signature and photo, one bearing your signature. Your photo will be taken for the score report and you will be required to sign the Candidate Rules Agreement.
The test will be administered via computer. You will not need any prior computer experience in order to successfully navigate the examination. A short tutorial regarding the functions of the computer will be offered to you prior to starting the exam.
You will be allowed four hours to complete the 140-question test.
Due to variations in test forms, passing scores are not determined by percentage, but by scaled score. The score necessary to pass is 70. You will receive a score report at the testing center indicating ìpassî or ìfail.î If you pass, instructions regarding obtaining a license will be included. If you fail, the score report will show diagnostic information about your score.
You may make a reservation to retake the exam 24 hours after your failed attempt.
